ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an important aspect of the common solution: the interoperability between externality, engagement and awareness platforms and how respective processes over these platforms are combined to address specific challenges. Technologies for connected intelligence bring people and organisations together, set up networks and sustain collaboration. Moreover, they are used to build digital platforms on which users and developers may deploy their own activities. Engagement platforms are crafted through the logic of social innovation. Engagement is the commitment made by members to participate in activities that fulfil the community’s objectives. The platform and the respective smart ecosystem are the medium for connected intelligence becoming effective through the agglomeration of people, organisations, resources, critical mass, motivation for engagement, and behaviour change. Further research is needed to understand and document the problem-solving capacity of connected intelligence, compared to mere human, mere organisational intelligence, or mere machine intelligence.
