ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and discusses the value of reporting leading indicators. It provides a few ideas of how safety risk can be integrated into the wider risk management considerations of organisations and thereby more fully engage managers. The chapter explains a discussion of the merits of external accreditation and certification. Health & safety reports for senior managers and directors are no different from those reported in other disciplines. Organisational leadership require assurance that the safety management system is being effectively applied and that health & safety risk is being successfully mitigated in line with legal requirements and the organisation’s risk appetite and tolerance. The accountability would be assigned further up the management chain at the point where the ability to provide resources and ensure competency lies. In the UK, many directors are concerned about their accountability with regard to the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.
