ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the economic rights and entitlements that people who apply for asylum in the UK have recourse to. It starts from the international context, describing how economic rights relate to human rights more broadly, who has access to economic rights, and how they relate to people seeking asylum. It then explains the current policy regime that operates in the UK, including what kinds of economic rights and entitlements are afforded to people seeking asylum, those whose application has been refused, and those whose application has been accepted. This includes a discussion of how the current policy emerged and evolved, and an overview of the evidence on the poverty and destitution that has followed from this policy approach.
