ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Irm Haleem focuses on the process of violence, and the two stages within the process of violence: narratives of violence, and the dissemination of the narratives of violence. She argues that the narratives of violence are universal in their logic, and premised on moralizing, legalizing, and popularizing violence. She further submits that the tools for the dissemination of these narratives are also universal in that they rely on the common discourse dissemination outlets (media and communiqués of sorts) and iconography. Drawing upon George Kateb, she argues that the narratives of violence focus on manufacturing enemies; while drawing upon Noam Chomsky, she argues that the dissemination of narratives focuses on manufacturing consent for violence. And it is these two elements, functioning in tandem with each other, that, she contends, normalizes violence.
