ABSTRACT

The title referred to the fact that at that time, the National Press Club was off limits to women reporters. Not only were women denied membership, but during news conferences, important speeches and other events held at the club, while the men dined on the main floor of the club’s ballroom, the foodless women were relegated to the balcony. The newsroom was a very different place than it is today. It was an enormous room, from 43rd to 44th street, and almost from Broadway to 8th Avenue. Editors summoned reporters using a public address system that was heard throughout the room. Sid Zion, the criminal justice reporter, threw a coming out party for a thug convicted of extortion, just released from Sing Sing. It was attended by everybody from the publisher on down. Shortly after the party the thug returned to his bad habits, was convicted and sent back to prison.
