ABSTRACT

An assessment of the current monographic literature of two subspecialties of biotechnology was undertaken in the Science division of the Columbia University Libraries. The two aspects were biocatalysis (an area of interest to chemists, biologists, and engineers) and applied molecular biology, specifically cloning and cell culture (also of interest to chemists, biologists, and engineers). Bibliographies were compiled from holdings of major research libraries, CIP records and publishers’ flyers. One of the objects of the assessment was to fill in the gaps in our collection, which is dispersed in 3 libraries. Another object was to develop an understanding of the subject itself, and a third was to document the need for additional funds and analyze the expenditure increases for five years.
