ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to prepare for and conduct a research interview, where this is the chosen research method. In particular, questions of power in the relationship between research participant and interviewer are discussed within the context of striving for ethical practice. Within applied linguistics it is particularly relevant to examine how to work with multilingual participants – including what language choices to offer and corresponding adaptations to the methodology. The chapter also focuses on affect, incorporating lessons from psychotherapy on identifying one’s own vulnerabilities and potential for vicarious traumatisation, and working safely with vulnerable groups. This includes considering how language intersects with an individual’s trauma. Interview strategies presented include emotional preparation, embodied reflexivity and how to introduce self-care for both parties.
