ABSTRACT

We argue for the superiority of R to SPSS and guide the reader to resources that make R easier to use, such as Mizumoto’s website (langtest.jp) and GUI interfaces with R such as R Commander. We will emphasize the importance of visualizing results first through informational graphics (many only available through R, not SPSS). We will discuss Occam’s razor and the use of more sophisticated statistical techniques versus the tried-and-true traditional methods. Some mention will be made of robust techniques of data analysis. Lastly, we will help the reader interpret the results from statistical software.
