ABSTRACT

At the learning center featured in this case study, an early childhood teacher learns how to adapt a physical education (PE) lesson to reinforce language for students with speech and language impairments. The teacher is not trained in any specialized gross or fine motor movements, so she consults with both a speech pathologist and an adapted physical educator. Together, they create a lesson using movement concepts with simple phrases to extend the receptive language of the children. After expanding the game with further adaptations, including increased verbal language, the lesson is highly successful.
