ABSTRACT

The charter school in this case study provides progressive education, promoting social-emotional learning and physical activity. An eighth grader with type II diabetes and obesity has difficulty just walking from class to class, and he hates physical education (PE). The school has gotten him involved in a smaller PE program with the help of a district adapted physical educator. After talking to the student’s parents, the APE decides to use an iPad and stationary bike to motivate him. Despite some initial success and the addition of private, after-school instruction, the student continues to gain weight. Without the cooperation of family members at home and constant food monitoring, the APE can only do so much. She continues to search for ways to teach PE differently to students with diabetes and obesity, hoping to reach the student before his condition becomes too severe for the school to accommodate.
