ABSTRACT

As there are many different types of annotations and kinds of resources, student confusion is understandable. Chapter 4 guides students and other researchers through the vocabulary and other basics of annotating resources. The chapter categorizes the five main annotation types of annotations: descriptive, summative, evaluative (similar to critical), reflective, and combined. For each type of annotation, it explores the objectives, parts, and disciplinary variations involved with writing annotations, including illustrations throughout of example citations and annotations that feature the elements of annotations written with the documentation formats of APA, MLA, and Chicago/CMOS. It also includes checklists for the creation of each of the five types of annotation.
