ABSTRACT

The process of assigning teachers to roles impacts multiple factors such as performance, job satisfaction, retention and working conditions. Typical principal assignment behaviors consist of posting a vacancy notice, interviewing candidates for that specific vacancy, hiring the best candidate and filling the vacancy with that candidate. Principals who strategically assign candidates to vacancies pay attention to the alignment between candidate skill set and the vacancy. When making strategic assignments, school leaders should aim for every student, especially students of color, to have the opportunity to be assigned to a teacher of color at some point during their student career. An important consideration in making a strong assignment for beginning teachers is work load. After identifying column and row headings, school leaders should work to identify which areas of knowledge and which skills are held by the actual teacher currently assigned to that position.
