ABSTRACT

Most pervasive and perduring are the tradition’s abstracted and imaged configurations of extension and duration, which it geometrizes and counts as space and time and which it has come to rejoin as space-time. Immediate experience is seamlessly spatio-temportal and time-space rather than space-time, for it is the pulse and rhythm of feeling which structures the formlessness of space. The sciences project pure designs in the form of mathematical equations. The patterns are of the rhythm, balance and harmony postulated for pure design. The knowing and skilfull persons who profess the naturalism employ it, however, in order to free human enterprise from nature’s determinations, in order to achieve human purposes by harnessing the purposeless forces of nature into means for human ends. The philosophic tradition carries on a continuing debate over habit, contingency, necessity and over the direction and mode of causation.
