ABSTRACT

Currently, laws and regulations requiring the labeling of foods and agricultural products that are genetically modified or that contain genetically modified ingredients have been established in more than 36 countries. These include essentially all global centers of economic power, except North America. To comply with these regulations, government and industry need the capacity to monitor food and agricultural products at all levels of the food chain for the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The capacity to test for GMOs not only enables compliance with labeling regulations, but also enables industry to meet consumers’ demands for transparency regarding the presence of GMOs in food.
