ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the case is made for the inclusion of the design disciplines with regard to climate-adaptive design and development. While the book addresses a number of projects that have been designed, constructed, and managed by non-designers, this chapter acknowledges that such work might be improved with professional support, and that in order to scale up such efforts, designers necessarily will need a seat at the table. New visions are needed to promote self-sufficiency and resilience as cities and towns transition under the new environmental pressures caused by climate change. Designers have a unique training, interest, and skillset for dealing with the unknowns of climate change. The chapter addresses design value in general terms, as well as relative to climate-adaptive design projects in Ladakh.
