ABSTRACT

The topic of solar design, including passive and active strategies, is introduced in this chapter. Solar design solutions can be categorized as “low-tech,” “improved low-tech,” and “high-tech.” Solar design thinking has long been a consideration for Ladakhi villages, buildings, and even rooms within households. This chapter discusses the mechanics of various solar systems, including passive solar buildings, photovoltaic electricity at the village and household level, and solar hot water. Benefits and limitations of solar design interventions are discussed, as well as new design directions. Finally, the chapter addresses these concepts with regard to material availability, access to technologies and ongoing regional trade.
