ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by encouraging parents to believe in themselves, outlines unique aspects of applying Healing the Self in the home and how parents can implement these ideas with their families. It discusses when an expert may, in fact, be needed, and concludes with a case study. Children develop self-esteem through relationships. The most important relationship for any child, whether positive or negative, is with their parents and family. For many children their positive sense of self develops seamlessly in the home. From infancy, children grow to idealize their parents. This complex, evolving, integral process enables developing a sense of self as capable, worthy, and powerful. Infants begin to learn self-regulation of their bodies and emotions through soothing and reflective responses from their parents when they are uncomfortable, excited, fearful, happy, or frustrated. Acceptance and belonging are fundamental needs. Belonging differs at home when compared to a school or clinic.
