ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews information about counseling in a highly diverse society. Differences in culture can include ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, and geography, along with many other factors. Counselors need to develop insight, skills, and dispositions that facilitate client growth in relation to these different cultural factors. When developing insight counselors not only learn about the influences of their culture, but they also learn about other cultural values and biases. This chapter highlights the understanding of identity development of several groups of people as well as issues of power, privilege, and advocacy.
