ABSTRACT

Counselors utilize research and assessment strategies for both clinical and scientific purposes. In clinical settings counselors use a variety of measurements to assess client characteristics such as personality, depression, anxiety, career interests, and cognitive ability, among others. This chapter reviews some of the most frequently used assessments in these areas. In addition, basic concepts of assessment are discussed. These assessments help clinicians diagnose and develop treatment plans. In the area of scientific research counselors need to be able to understand the major components of a peer-reviewed research article, including research questions, variables, types of research, and research designs.
