ABSTRACT

Deficit thinking in Africa is the subject of this chapter. Deficit thinking in two countries, South Africa and Nigeria, are discussed. In regards to South Africa, these topics are covered: (a) conquest and colonization of South Africa; (b) apartheid; (c) ethnic demographic profile; (d) TAG; (e) manifestations of deficit thinking in educational thought and practice. The deficit thinking themes are: (a) school choice; (b) language; (c) higher education; (d) parents. For Nigeria, the topics covered are: (a) conquest and colonization of Nigeria; (b) ethnic demographic profile; (c) TAG; (d) manifestation of deficit thinking in educational thought and practice. The sole deficit thinking theme is concerned with gender inequality.
