ABSTRACT

The Isle of Wight Undercliff is an extensive coastal landslide complex with a permanent population of around 6500 located in the small towns of Ventnor, St Lawrence and Niton (for the most recent studies see Moore et al. 2007, Carey et al. 2007, Palmer et al. 2007). Contemporary ground movements within the town have been slight (e.g. Marsden, 2007). However, because movement occurs in an urban area, the cumulative damage to roads, buildings and services has been substantial. Over the last 100 years about 50 houses and hotels have had to be demolished because of ground movement. The average annual loss in the Ventnor area has been estimated by the local authority as exceeding £3 M.
