ABSTRACT

When binary granular mixture is poured into a HeleShaw cell, we can observe a segregation pattern or a stratification pattern depending on the experimental conditions (Makse et al. 1997). The former pattern is formed when we mix homogeneously “larger and smooth grains” and “smaller and rough grains”, while the latter pattern is formed when we mix “larger and rough grains” and “smaller and smooth grains”. These patterns depend on sizes of grains and an angle of repose (Makse et al. 1997).
