ABSTRACT

The progressive development of transport infrastructures in the Czech Republic resulted in design of many tunnels. The new trends of design and construction of underground structures came mostly from abroad. Tunnels represent very important parts of roads and railways, no limitations of traffic should be allowed, and therefore the tunnels must be safe, economical and they must serve the users without any restrictions during their entire service life. The experiences concerning the long term tunnel performance are sufficiently different in many countries, so that it was considered useful to verify the tunnel lining performance in the Czech conditions. The objective of this paper is to provide information on measurements carried out in selected tunnels, which should provide a basis for tunnel assessment and, later, for possible modification of the design methods.
