ABSTRACT

Likely close to the end of his career, al-Shaykh Aḥmad al-Damanhūrī composed a treatise entitled al-Minaḥ al-Damanhūriyyah, where he listed his main teachers, the books that he read with them, as well as his own writings. The treatise offers a unique opportunity to peer through the education of a scholar who rose to the top of the scholarly community in late Ottoman Egypt, despite starting from rather humble backgrounds. The chapter analyzes this treatise discussing the different topics, questions, and approaches that al-Damanhūrī took in his studies and his writings. The chapter also includes complete lists of the books and authors that al-Damanhūrī mentioned in his writings arranged by master, author, and discipline.
