ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part describes the specific tool, which is aimed at those who want to dig deeper into the research basis for the development of the tool. The guide starts with the following five typical challenges that facilities managers meet in their daily work life: strategy development, organisational design, space planning, building projects and optimisation. The structure and culture of collaboration in the organisation is central to any head of Facilities Management (FM). FM is a management discipline that requires holistic thinking and coordination. Concerns developing more sustainable buildings in a life-cycle perspective by focusing on the future users and ensuring that buildings are operation friendly by integrating knowledge from FM. Concerns the FM organisation reconsidering each working procedure. This can be caused by new strategic goals or insufficient performance in measurement of – for instance, satisfaction with response time, service levels or cost levels.
