ABSTRACT

In this book, I have tried to sketch the broad outlines of a new personalism, an eschatologically informed personalism. I felt it necessary to do so because I believe that we are moving into a new period of history characterized by massive disruptions in human consciousness including the development of a whole new relationship with the machines we produce. All of the previous proposals for what constitutes the imago Dei in human persons (reason, intelligence, consciousness, etc.) cannot withstand the challenge of the rise of intelligent machines in this new period of history. These machines already exhibit all of the characteristics that have been previously supposed to reflect the imago Dei: rationality, creativity, emotions, mind-reading abilities, calculating abilities, and consciousness itself.
