ABSTRACT

Dreams do more than simply speak the language of metaphor, many would suggest that they are metaphor. Understanding the dreamscape as expressed in metaphor helps us make sense of it, and to see that a dream is not the mind’s attempt to obscure, but rather the body’s attempt to communicate in the way that comes most naturally. Much of the strangeness and apparent obscurity of dreams is removed as soon as we understand that we should not always take them literally but rather view them metaphorically as well. This chapter describes metaphor as a fundamental way we understand and communicate rather than as merely a linguistic device. It presents several dream examples and shows how one might view them as metaphors for aspects of the dreamer’s life.
