ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the quantitative method. It deals with questions of influence, power, and social structure. The chapter provides more insight into how Minera San Cristobal (MSC) fits into the broader ecology of social, political, and economic dynamics of the Department and the country. In interviews with MSC's stakeholders, we took advantage of the synergies created by integrating information on the verbal opinions expressed by each stakeholder, the social licence level granted by each, and the network position occupied by each stakeholder. The first source of error, lack of articulation, is dealt with in the part of the interview that measures the social licence. By narrowing the field of network participants to leaders of stakeholder groups or organisations with significant stakes we avoided the problem of counting everyone in the world as a stakeholder of MSC.
