ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the fundamental concepts of Big Data (BD). It begins by describing what BD is all about and how it is generated. The chapter presents wireless BD, big data analytics (BDA), and common tools for analyzing BD. It discusses typical applications of BD which include smart power grid, Internet of Things (IoT), business, industry, healthcare, nursing, business, manufacturing, and public agencies. The chapter addresses various benefits and challenges of BD. BD applies to data sets of extreme size (e.g., exabytes, zettabytes) which are beyond the capability of the commonly used software tools. It generally refers to the following types of data: enterprise data, machine-generated/sensor data, and social data. BD sources can be divided into three categories: from human activities, from the physical world, and from computers. BDA involves examining large amounts of data to uncover hidden patterns, correlations, actionable insights, trends, and other useful information.
