ABSTRACT

The Rio 2016 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games presented a unique experience relative to the processes of urbanization and city design for a large-scale metropolis within a developing country. This chapter elaborates on the design of the Barra Olympic Park, the main sports hub for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. It does so from the perspective of an architect and urban designer involved in the Olympic site’s design processes by describing various challenges such as Barra’s unsettling urban condition, the Game’s design selection process and international competition, and an interdisciplinary design methodology for the urban design of large sports events and considerations for Legacy contributions to the City of Rio de Janeiro.
