ABSTRACT

In some jobs fiddles are carried on with the collusion of management; yet in others fiddlers are ruthlessly and swiftly punished. In some fiddling is organised and carried out by individuals in isolation from their workmates. The grid dimension assesses the extent to which a culture imposes its social categories on its people and therefore fixes their appropriate behaviour and the behaviour of others towards them. The caste systems of India are strong on the grid dimension and so are all cultures where social position is largely determined by ‘fixed’ factors such as age, sex and birth. Cultures that emphasise lineage and clan organisation are strong on group. Some cultures minimise group control over their individuals and these are weak on group. Weak-grid jobs are those with an overall absence of constraints and where this is so is found freedom for people to transact with a wide range of others.
