ABSTRACT

The introduction of frozen foods implicitly acts as a stock control device and thus limits food-buying fiddles. In addition microwave ovens, pre-packaged foods, and catering systems all reduce the need for a chef’s skills, and therefore challenge his judgement. f students of industrial relations, let alone managers, want to find out what people are capable of rather than what they are actually required to do in their jobs, they must learn to listen to ‘the music behind the words’. This is equally true in interpreting action, only the music is louder. The dustmen had no record of industrial militancy, yet suddenly and, to most observers, inexplicably, they lodged a pay claim which was so unreasonably large that it stood no chance of success. Since the size of the claim infringed the government’s pay policy, it was rejected. Consequently, the dustmen went on strike. A technological shift has dramatically reduced his freedom to ‘monarchise’.
