ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the pattern of denominational adherence within each kirk session where comparisons are possible, namely the six parish churches of West, South, East, North, St Clement’s, and Greyfriars; and Trinity Church–the only quoad sacra parish where the remnant elders who adhered to the Establishment can be traced. It looks at those elders who ceased serving on the kirk sessions before the Disruption, and in the event itself did not commit themselves to either serving on the Established or Free kirk session. The chapter deals with the pattern of adherence with regard to the ‘Loyalists’; that is those elders who adhered to the Establishment in 1843 as well as those men who were co-opted to serve on the Established kirk sessions in the eight years following the Disruption. It deals with the pattern of adherence with regard to the ‘Seceders’—those who went over to the Free Church at the Disruption as well as those who were elected to office.
