ABSTRACT
The author addresses Rousseau’s extravagant critical response to central components of the Enlightenment, particularly the belief in the reality and positive value of the progress mankind has made in the sciences and the arts. He subjects Rousseau’s First Discourse to a close reading and also examines some contemporary responses to his position.
