ABSTRACT

The final chapter discusses innovative expressions of love used by female Hausa authors. These new phrases — not evident in traditional Hausa society — are used to articulate the themes central to the interests of these writers. Many Hausa love expressions find their origin in love poems and original Arabic stories that are transmitted either orally or in manuscripts written in Hausa in the Arabic script (Ajami). The impact of Indian movies has also enabled female Hausa authors to enrich their narratives with love-related plots. Furthermore, the internet has ushered in an era in which Hausa authors have additional platforms to discuss their writings, and the availability of social media networks has opened new ways for Hausa authors to express love — of which emoticons of like and love are a simple example. This chapter highlights new trends for expressing love in female Hausa narratives and shows how these innovations have impacted on social media platforms in particular and on Hausa society in general.
