ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents propositions of how aspects of economics are present within education and schooling, and how they may impact learning and teaching. It focuses on the editors’ interest and expertise in education. In the case of education and economics, the book outlines some of the new political rationalities based on ‘truths’ associated with the economy, the market, human capital and an entrepreneurial vision of the individual. It argues that understandings and approaches to education are constructed through economic discourse. To explore how economic ideas have become embedded in understandings of education, the book also presents a variety of perspectives which illuminate how economics insidiously defines the meaning and purpose of education and schooling. It offers critical exploration of how the university as an institution has undergone profound change, and has come under pressure to renew itself to meet economic demands.
