ABSTRACT

In this chapter we analyze the current sociolinguistic conditions of one of the native languages with the highest number of speakers in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico: the Ralámuli or Tarahumara-raicha language, which like one of the minority languages in the world its permanence in the medium term is threatened. Based on the above, the opportunities for its linguistic revitalization can be undertaken. The displacement of the language is exacerbated by globalization, while at the same time a set of educational and social policies emerge for its strengthening and linguistic revitalization. The challenges/opportunities are organized into four major elements, which are necessary to address in a comprehensive manner: the processes of language normalization; education in and for linguistic strengthening; promotion through mass media and communication; and the cultural production in the Ralámuli language.
