ABSTRACT

Gerty Theresa Radnitz Cori was born on August 15, 1896, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Gerty Cori was the first American woman and the third woman to receive a Nobel Prize in science. In 1922 Gerty Cori joined her husband Carl Cori at the State Institute for the Study of Malignant Diseases, in Buffalo, New York, where she held the position of researcher until 1931. The Coris made many other important contributions to the understanding of carbohydrate metabolism, the effects of the hormones insulin and epinephrine on carbohydrate metabolism, tumor glycolysis, and the action of pituitary extracts. The Coris experienced some institutional resistance to collaborative research at the State Institute for the Study of Malignant Diseases, in Buffalo, New York. Carl Cori’s invitation to join the Washington University School of Medicine included a research position with a token salary for Gerty Cori.
