ABSTRACT
The law of the sea in South East Asia is currently facing many challenges. These challenges arise not so much from the law itself but from the consequences of the law of the sea for the region and how South East Asian States have responded to the law. South East Asian States have been beneficiaries and strong supporters of the law of the sea, as framed around the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC). This chapter assesses the challenges confronting the law of the sea in South East Asia by first considering current and known controversies and how the law of the sea has responded to and is shaping those controversies. Consideration will then move to an assessment of known, assumed and potential horizon threats for the law of the sea in South East Asia.
