ABSTRACT

In the maritime domain, ‘maritime security’ can be used to describe an ever-expanding number of issues that affect the manner in which ocean spaces are used by a wide variety of interested parties. Although there are many regions throughout the world where maritime security concerns exist, those that affect South East Asia demand particular attention for a number of reasons. This chapter examines the concept of security to understand how it can be applied in practice before exploring a broad range of maritime security issues that exist in South East Asia. Consideration of the role that states and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have played in addressing maritime security issues, as well as other institutional involvement in the region, is also provided. The chapter also discusses the key maritime security issues that exist in South East Asia.
