ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the fourth and final research objective. The first objective was to examine the existing views of counsellors on the significance of cultural and ethnic differences between counsellor and client in the counselling relationship. The independent variable of gender of counsellor showed no statistical relationship with the Cultural Awareness Inventory and it would seem from this finding that gender was not associated with predictive qualities of Eurocentrism. There was a statistically significant negative relationship between increasing age and the Cultural Awareness Inventory. Counsellors with increasing age showed less favourable scores on the Cultural Awareness Inventory. The stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated the age of counsellor as a significant predictor of a counsellor’s score on the Cultural Awareness Inventory with the older age groups of counsellors showing less favourable scores on the Cultural Awareness Inventory than the younger age groups.
