ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a Scandinavian approach to achieving healing architecture. The recent building boom within the healthcare sector has demanded an evidence-based approach to designing hospitals that are not only state-of-the-art from a contemporary perspective but also robust in relation to future developments. Superhospitals elevate the role of healthcare in modern Scandinavia. As a publicly funded resource for the surrounding community, superhospitals become more accessible through mirroring their urban contexts. By creating neighborhoods, each with a unique visual identity, the large structure is scaled down and broken into recognizable parts, which makes it navigable and comprehensible. Public programs and a centralized location position the superhospital as an approachable activity hub for promoting health. Much like the network of parks that take on an elevated role because of their contrast to the cityscape in urban centers, landscape is an important part of the overall structure in superhospitals.
