ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses typography and its role in design. Type is a key element of design; it is equal in importance to graphics. A contributing factor to the tone and mood of an image, type is integral to the overall success or failure of a design. This chapter outlines the goals of type in design and encourages the reader to incorporate typography in a meaningful way. Typography refers to the style and appearance of the printed word. The chapter begins with an overview of type and related terminology. This includes distinguishing characteristics used to identify type. Familiarity with this terminology facilitates discussions of typefaces and their classifications in one of four type categories: serif, sans serif, script, or decorative. Type assessment in the forms of legibility and readability are presented along with techniques for improving these attributes. The chapter concludes with a discussion question based on the following topic: typeface goals. An end-of-chapter activity involves typeface formatting.
