ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces layers and the roles that layers play in adding graphic elements, text and text effects to an image. Layers are a key component to the designer's ability to create and edit an image in Photoshop. Exercise 7.1 presents an opportunity to use layers to enhance an image file. Then attention shifts to the three options available for creating text in Photoshop: point type, paragraph type and type on a path. Exercise 7.2 provides practice in adding text to an image and adjusting the type properties. Following each exercise, enriching nuggets of information expand the discussion of the application. Topics covered include transformation tools, alternate ways to eliminate content using the eraser tools, rasterizing layers and creating warped text. The chapter concludes with discussion questions based on the following topics: resizing content proportionally and the use of layers in an image file. An end-of-chapter activity challenges readers to utilize their Photoshop skills to create an effective design.
