ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the art of digital photography and its role in graphic design. Discussion acknowledges the omnipresence of cameras in today's society, in the form of cell phones, and the ease with which digital photographs can be taken and manipulated. Next, the Exposure Triangle and its elements, aperture, shutter speed and ISO, are introduced as tools that the photographer can utilize within the camera to affect a photograph. Attention then shifts to the composition of a photograph and strategic approaches that can be used when framing a shot to craft an engaging and visually appealing image. The use of stock images as an alternate source of photographs and images is presented. This is followed by a discussion of copyright and a designer's rights. The chapter concludes with discussion questions based on the following topics: “go to” camera shots and the elements of photographic composition. End-of-chapter activities involve photo-based scavenger hunts.
