ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the fundamentals of Integration of Process Planning and Scheduling (IPPS). Initially, it presents the basics of manual process planning and computer aided process planning (CAPP). Also, the decision-making process in master production scheduling (MPS) and detailed scheduling has been presented with popular performance measures of scheduling such as makespan, tardiness, earliness, flow time, and throughput, etc. This chapter clearly lays down the types of shop configurations, particularly the insights on job shop scheduling system to understand its importance in manufacturing. Next, the needs of IPPS have been discovered in order to understand the background and importance of it to affecting manufacturing lead time, product variety (mix), quality, cost and demand, as well as the energy consumption and pollutant emissions. Lastly, the outfit of IPPS in Industry 4.0 paradigm has been clearly addressed in order to identify the importance of elements of artificial intelligence (AI) such as big data (BD), machine learning (ML), and cybersecurity to achieve IPPS.
