ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we provide a brief historical summary of integrated STEM curriculum in the United States and internationally from the 19th century to the present. The integration of curriculum within STEM is not new and, as noted by several researchers, there have been a number of references to various forms of integration over the past 100 years with the earliest cases focused on the integration of mathematics and science. The focus of this chapter is on the history and development of STEM curriculum and the influential factors that have impacted that development from the 19th century to the present.
