ABSTRACT

Women continue to constitute disproportionately smaller percentages in most STEM professions, necessitating continued research. Although the gender-related STEM discussions are still overwhelmingly focused on this body of research, it is expanding in light of realized differences among STEM fields and contemporary discussions of gender. This chapter provides an overview of contemporary research on gender equity and STEM education. This was accomplished by reviewing the inherent definitions of gender, the reasons for gender-based discrepancies in various college and career STEM pathways, and strategies aimed at addressing these discrepancies. The chapter ends with a review of inherent challenges and future research directions.
