ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the nature of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in the context of noise-exposure levels in the workplace.
The chapter starts with a brief description of how the human hearing system works and of different forms of hearing loss. This is followed by an explanation of how hearing can be damaged by over-exposure to high levels of noise, and how hearing sensitivity is measured.
