ABSTRACT

Same-sex marriage has become a marker of how far any country has gone in achieving equality for its LGBTQ+1 citizens. However, whilst in the United Kingdom those who are in same-sex relationships can now get married, it is still rare that any LGBTQ+ person experiencing domestic violence and abuse (DVA) will report this to the police or other mainstream domestic violence and abuse service. In this chapter, three reasons are considered that explain why this might be the case and that point to the lack of equality that still exists for those who are LGBTQ+. The three reasons are: the legacy of living in a society that has historically socially produced LGBTQ+ people as deviant, the impacts of neoliberalism on the implementation of sexualities equalities policies and the public story of DVA that socially constructs DVA heteronormatively.
